How to pack mangoes for travel, flight, train, car

Ripeness on departure, pick firm
For any journey over four hours, travel with mangoes that are 48-72 hours from peak. They'll finish ripening on the journey and arrive ready.
Travelling with peak-ripe fruit is a recipe for bruised, fermented mango. Buy firm, travel firm.
The newspaper-and-rigid-box system
Wrap each mango individually in two layers of newspaper, then nest in a rigid cardboard or wooden box with shredded paper packing. This is exactly how Pakistan ships them.
Do not use a soft bag. Mangoes need rigid walls to survive the inevitable knocks of luggage handling.
Temperature rules
Keep mangoes between 10°C and 25°C in transit. Hold luggage on a plane can drop to 4°C, too cold and chill injury kicks in. Cabin baggage is safer.
Never put mangoes in a freezer pack or ice bag. The cold ruins them faster than the heat ever will.
UK domestic customs and restrictions
Travelling with mangoes within the UK is unrestricted. Crossing UK borders is a different matter, fresh fruit is subject to plant-health rules and may not be brought from outside the UK into the UK without inspection.
Within the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, NI), no restrictions apply for personal-quantity fruit.
On-arrival recovery
Unpack immediately on arrival. Check for any bruised fruit and use those first.
Lay the rest on a tea-towel-lined tray at room temperature, stems down. Within 24-48 hours they'll finish ripening and be ready to eat.
