When to introduce
UK weaning guidance suggests starting solids at around 6 months. Mango is suitable from day one of weaning, it's soft, naturally sweet (no added sugar needed), allergen-low (mango is not on the UK 14 priority allergen list), and provides vitamin C and beta-carotene that breast milk and formula are relatively low in.
There's no need to delay mango as 'allergy prevention'. Recent guidance from the BSACI and EAACI actively supports early introduction of a variety of foods to reduce later allergy risk.
Texture by age
6 to 7 months: ripe Chaunsa mashed with a fork to a smooth purée, or sliced into 5cm fat strips for baby-led weaning. The strip should be the width of two adult fingers so the baby can grip without it sliding away.
8 to 10 months: 1cm soft cubes, eaten with fingers or pre-loaded spoon. 12 months+: bite-sized pieces, eaten independently. Avoid whole rounds or coins until the child is fully chewing, round shapes are the choking-risk geometry.
Daily portion and frequency
From 6 months: 30 to 60g (a few spoonfuls) once a day as part of a meal. From 12 months: a full small portion (~100g) once a day. From 2 years: any reasonable serving, the UK 5-a-day model applies from age 2.
Don't worry about sugar content. UK added-sugar guidance (no more than 14g/day for 4 to 6 year olds) applies to added sugars and free sugars (juice), not to whole fruit.
Allergy and safety watchpoints
Mango allergy is rare but documented. The first introduction should be a small spoonful with no other new food that day, so any reaction can be attributed correctly. Watch for facial flushing, hives or vomiting in the 2 hours after.
Children with severe poison ivy reactions, latex allergy, or birch pollen allergy have slightly elevated cross-reactivity risk to mango. Speak to your GP or paediatric allergist before first introduction if any of these apply.
Frequently asked
- Is the mango skin safe for babies?
- Always peel mango for under-2s. The skin contains urushiol (same compound as poison ivy) and is a choking hazard regardless.
- Can I freeze mango for teething?
- Yes, frozen 5cm Chaunsa strips are a brilliant teething aid from 6 months. Hold the strip yourself (don't leave the child with it) to manage choking risk.
- What about juice?
- Avoid mango juice under 1 year entirely. From 1 to 5 years, dilute heavily (1:10 with water) and serve only with meals. Standard guidance on fruit juice and dental caries applies.
