Mango and cholesterol

How daily mango fits into a cholesterol-lowering diet.

The cholesterol-fibre mechanism

Soluble fibre, particularly pectin, which mango is rich in, binds bile acids in the small intestine. Bile is made from cholesterol; when bound bile is excreted instead of reabsorbed, the liver pulls more cholesterol from circulation to manufacture replacement bile. The net effect is lower blood LDL.

Meta-analyses (Brown et al., 1999) show 5 to 10g/day of soluble fibre reduces total cholesterol by 5 to 10 mg/dL. That's modest individually but cumulative across years.

How much mango is needed

A 200g portion of Chaunsa supplies roughly 3.2g soluble fibre. That's about 30% of the daily 10g target. You'd need to pair it with oats, beans, lentils, apples and barley to reach the full target, mango alone is not enough.

Realistic plan: porridge with apple at breakfast (4g), lentil dal at lunch (3g), mango at dinner (3g). That's 10g of soluble fibre and a coherent plan.

Polyphenols beyond fibre

Mango polyphenols (mangiferin, quercetin) inhibit cholesterol synthesis in cell models. Whether this translates to humans at dietary doses isn't yet established, but it's a credible additional mechanism.

Animal studies show mango pulp extract lowers LDL by 10 to 15% in hyperlipidaemic rats. Human RCTs are smaller and more variable. The honest summary: directional benefit, magnitude unclear.

Where mango fits with statins and diet plans

If you're on a statin: mango is safe (no CYP3A4 interaction like grapefruit) and contributes to the dietary side of cholesterol management your GP will have discussed.

If you're using the Portfolio Diet or an Eatwell-based cholesterol plan: mango fits as a fruit serving but is not specifically called out. Its real value is making the diet enjoyable enough to sustain, and adherence beats theoretical perfection.

Frequently asked

Will mango raise my triglycerides?
Whole-fruit fructose at normal portions (1 to 2 mangoes/day) does not raise triglycerides in trials. Concentrated mango juice or smoothies can, drink whole, don't blend.
How quickly will I see cholesterol changes?
Dietary cholesterol changes typically appear in lipid panels 8 to 12 weeks after a sustained dietary shift. Don't expect a 2-week miracle.
Does dried mango have the same benefit?
Some, the fibre survives drying, but dried mango is energy-dense (320 kcal/100g) and easy to overeat. Fresh is the better choice for cholesterol-conscious eating.
