Why the Pakistani mango season is later, and the UK is grateful

Indian mangoes finish by late June. Pakistani mangoes are just hitting peak. This is the gift of the late season.

The latitude effect

Pakistani mango orchards sit between 24° and 32° north latitude, meaningfully further north than India's mango belt (10°-20° N). Higher latitude means cooler winters, later flowering, and a later harvest.

Multan flowers in mid-February. Maharashtra (the Alphonso belt) flowers in mid-December. That two-month gap propagates straight through to harvest.

The monsoon shift

Pakistan's monsoon arrives in late July, about six weeks after India's monsoon. This shifts the optimal Pakistani harvest window into a late dry pre-monsoon period that doesn't exist in India.

The pre-monsoon dry heat is what concentrates sugar in Pakistani mangoes to the levels Indian varieties rarely reach.

The Honey Chaunsa extension

Honey Chaunsa, the late-cultivar selection from Khanewal, extends the Pakistani season into early September. By that point, every Indian mango cultivar has long finished.

This makes Pakistani mango uniquely positioned for late-summer UK demand, long after Alphonso season has ended.

What it means for UK buyers

The UK mango season effectively runs March-June for Indian fruit, then late-May-September for Pakistani fruit. For three months, you can buy both, and from late June onwards, only Pakistani.

If you want fresh mango in August, you want Pakistani. It's the only choice.

The downside of being late

By the time Pakistani mango season arrives, UK weather is warm enough that ripening accelerates dramatically. A box that takes seven days to ripen in May ripens in three days in August.

We adjust pre-arrival ripening levels accordingly. Boxes shipped in August arrive firmer than boxes shipped in June, by design.
