Pakistani mango season in the UK: a month-by-month guide

From the first Sindhri carton in late May to the final Langra in mid-August, the complete UK Pakistani mango calendar.

May: Sindhri opens the season

The Pakistani mango year begins in mid-to-late May with the first Sindhri shipments out of Mirpur Khas, in lower Sindh. The fruits are early because Sindh gets hotter sooner than Punjab, Mirpur Khas averages 42°C by mid-April, fast-tracking flowering and fruit set.

Early-season Sindhri is brighter and slightly more acidic than peak-season fruit. It's the mango most British-Pakistani families wait for through the long UK winter, the first taste of summer.

June: Sindhri peak, Chaunsa opens

By early June, Sindhri supply hits its peak, cartons are abundant, prices stabilise, and the fruit reaches its fullest flavour. This is the best window for buying Sindhri in bulk for the freezer.

From mid-June, the first honey-Chaunsa cartons start to arrive from Multan. Early Chaunsa is firmer and less sweet than peak-season fruit, most connoisseurs wait until July for the honey.

July: peak of the entire season

July is the apex of the Pakistani mango year. Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol, Dosehri and the last of the Sindhri all overlap, it's the only month where multi-variety boxes make sense.

Anwar Ratol is in season for barely four weeks, almost all of it in July. If you're going to buy Anwar Ratol at all, this is the month. Dosehri peaks in mid-to-late July, alongside the best honey-Chaunsa.

August: Chaunsa peak, Langra opens

Honey-Chaunsa hits its absolute peak in the first two weeks of August. The fruit is at its sweetest, the supply is steady, and the flavour is what most British-Pakistani families remember from their parents' kitchens.

Mid-August brings the season's last variety: Langra from Multan. Green-skinned even when ripe, complex and tropical, Langra closes out the year. By the third week of August, supply tapers; the last cartons usually ship in the final week.

September to April: out of season

Once the last Langra cartons ship at the end of August, the Pakistani mango season is generally considered over until the following May. Fresh Pakistani mango is a seasonal product, so if something is described as fresh Pakistani mango outside the typical May to August window, it's worth asking suppliers exactly when and where it was harvested.

For year-round mango supply, freeze pulp during the season, Chaunsa or Dosehri are best, and use through winter for lassi, kulfi and chutneys.

How Sindhri fits into the Pakistani mango season

The Pakistani mango season typically runs from May to August. Sindhri usually opens the year, Chaunsa carries the mid-summer window, Anwar Ratol and Dosehri overlap in mid-season, and Langra tends to close things out in August. Sindhri generally sits in the may to july window, timing varies each year with the harvest.

If you're new to Pakistani mango, the simplest plan is to try one variety at a time across the season. Availability varies by current allocation, see the current allocation on the shop before you order.

Comparing Pakistani mango to other options

Pakistani mango varieties have their own flavour signatures, Sindhri's citrus brightness, Chaunsa's honeyed sweetness, Anwar Ratol's perfume, Dosehri's delicate honey-melon, Langra's tropical complexity. They are different from Alphonso, Ataulfo/Honey and Kent-family supermarket mangoes in taste, texture and season.

As with any imported tropical fruit, ripeness at arrival depends on how the fruit is handled through the supply chain. If perfume and full flavour matter, plan to ripen at room temperature until the fruit yields to a gentle press, then refrigerate briefly before eating.
